History in the making at Wirra Wirra
Posted: 15 August 2016 / Prepared by: Miranda Lang / Update on recent changes provided by Andrew Kay, Managing Directo / CEO of Wirra Wirra
At Wirra Wirra we’ve long carried an entrepreneurial streak and like to set ourselves little challenges.
Whether it’s been turning the ruins of an abandoned 19th century estate into a world class winery, or creating a medieval siege machine to bomb neighbouring vineyards, improbable causes are championed here. It’s with this spirit of progression that I’m pleased to announce we have recently invested in upgrading our winery facilities to create a world class tourism destination with a range of new attractions.
A relaxing indoor / outdoor café boasting killer coffee and a light menu full of South Australian regional produce, Harry’s Deli has just opened as part of our major cellar door refurbishment. This is a casual café – no bookings or full service kitchen - showcasing the best of regional and SA-based produce. We want our suppliers to be the heroes and we’ve hand-picked a list of fine local provedores who’re making themselves at home in Harry’s Deli. Whether it’s award winning artisan salumi from San Jose Smallgoods, legendary sourdough from Willunga’s Andy Clappis or delicious cheeses selected from the larder at Say Cheese, Harry’s Deli offers visitors a relaxing and informal eating experience to accompany a glass or two of their favourite Wirra Wirra wines.
New Tour Experiences
A selection of eight new tours that provide an intimate insight into life at Wirra Wirra, ranging from a one-hour private tasting, right up to our Signature Day Tour. Experiences on offer include exclusive behind the scenes access to our historic ironstone cellars, original cellar door and awarded vineyards; a selection of wine masterclasses; ringing our famous Angelus Bell and even flinging melons from our notorious catapult. Tours can be complemented with light meals or a full service feast. For those possessing a sweet tooth, there’s even a sumptuous Four Winds Chocolate Platter accompanying the best of our shiraz wines in the Shiraz Revolution Tour, all bookable online.
New Corporate Experiences
A selection of four new corporate packages offering business visitors exclusive use of the RS Wigley Room and Trott’s Cellar, adjoining our 100 year old cellars. Imagine a management meeting or planning day away from the confines of the city in a beautiful historic setting complete with all the modern conveniences required. Combine this with the fun of your own private wine masterclass in Trott’s Original Cellar Door, a Church Block blending session with one of our winemakers or even catapult flinging to create a little team building within your organisation. Select from one of our packages or work with us to create your own one-off experience.
Naturally, we’ve retained all the well-loved attractions that have made Wirra Wirra a must-visit McLaren Vale destination over the years. Cellar door exclusive wines – as well as familiar favourites, the massive post and rail Woodhenge Fence, the 3/4 tonne Angelus Bell, our viewing jetty overlooking the vineyards, spacious gardens and BBQ facilities that provide the perfect spot to unwind with family and friends all remain available to complement our new offering.
Our new attractions are all being unveiled this week, and we are thrilled to provide a showpiece venue for McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula. This facility captures the illustrious winemaking history of our region and celebrates emerging local food producers – both of which are becoming an essential feature of any visit to South Australia. With our new infrastructure and tour partnership with Getaways SA, Wirra Wirra offers a unique and convenient escape from Adelaide to discover world class food, wine and nature.
