Luxury dream home turned ‘Hall of Fame' Best Hosted Accommodation IN SA

Nov 2019

If you’re looking for a PICTURESQUE COUNTRY RETREAT TO RELAX AND REJUVINATE after a day sipping world-CLASS wine and exploring the best of the Fleurieu, then you may just want to keep on reading…

Nestled among the vines in the heart of one of Australia’s most famous wine regions, McLaren Vale, and on the edge of the historic township of Willunga, sits the beautiful Mulberry Lodge Country Retreat.

For many years, owners Hazel and Nik dreamt of living on a rural property in the stunning Fleurieu Peninsula, and 8 years ago they took the leap from their busy Adelaide lives (and previously even busier London lives!) to rural living. In 2011 they happen to stumble across the perfect mud brick home set on two acres of beautiful gardens with vineyard views, so they snapped it up straight away! A major drawcard was that it was big enough to accommodate their favourite past time - hosting deliciously large dinners for all their loved ones to come and stay. Fast-forward 8 years and Mulberry Lodge now holds the title of (for the third year running!) winner of the South Australian Tourism Award for Best Hosted Accommodation, 2016-2018, and has been inducted into the SA Tourism ‘Hall of Fame'. Wow, what an achievement!

This journey from their love of hosting intimate experiences for their closest family/friends to then paying guests explains the extra-special personal touches and memorable experiences guests are treated to when staying at Mulberry Lodge. In 2013, after word got around about the stunning property in town with friendly foodie hosts, Hazel and Nik began accepting paying guests for just one weekend per month. It wasn’t long until they were receiving so many enquiries that Hazel took the plunge and gave up her job in Adelaide. Having Hazel work at Mulberry Lodge fulltime allowed them to pursue their passion of sharing their beautiful property with guests all year round and they’ve never looked back!

If you're lucky enough to stay at Mulberry Lodge, be prepared to treat your tastebuds to an array of delicious homemade delights, such as Hazel’s divine chocolate & raspberry brownies, homemade breads and if it's the right time of year... mulberries! Hazel’s famous breakfast creations are made not only from the best local ingredients but also using seasonal produce straight out of their garden. Think poached eggs with smoked salmon, rocket and basil pesto in potato rosti baskets or spiced baked eggs with spinach, feta and homegrown tomatoes. One thing to be sure of is that it’s far from the standard!

Hazel and Nik's philosophy to always support local is shown through their partnerships with other operators in the region. These collaborations allow them to create the perfect itinerary for guests to become fully immersed in the absolute best sights, sounds, tastes and experiences the Fleurieu has to offer! Take your pick from helicopter rides that pick you up from the paddock and touch down at word-class local wineries for lunch, 4WD tours through pristine hidden bushland and breathtaking beaches, watching the sunset over the nearby Port Willunga Beach with a gourmet picnic hamper or if total relaxation is your thing then be sure to check out the Mulberry Lodge Luxury Pamper Package! Trust us, if you opt for the pampering, the post-treatment bliss will leave you feeling seriously refreshed and revitalised from head to toe… beware, this will result in never wanting to leave!

Make the most of your stay in the Fleurieu and let Hazel and Nik arrange the perfect custom itinerary for you to experience the ‘best of the best’ of our region while enjoying the complete tranquillity, stunning rural vistas and delicious local produce at Mulberry Lodge.
