the grapest fun run

Who would have thought that back in 1850, when Frank Potts recognised the potential of Langhorne Creek and settled on those ancient flood plains, that nearly 170 years down the track a bunch of wine-loving fitness nuts would be dashing en masse through the vines in search of the perfect full-bodied peppery Shiraz?
Well, that’s exactly how we are celebrating the birth of the Langhorne Creek Wine Region – with a wine-based fun run… but this is no ordinary tippling session.
Lake Breeze’s Event Manager, Kate Cooper, said “Lake Breeze Wines is very excited to be hosting the Grapest 5K Run. Our family property lies on the banks of the Bremer River and is surrounded by majestic river red gums, and overlooks the 225-acre vineyard. This event will be a great opportunity for people to visit the Langhorne Creek Region, and showcase Lake Breeze Wines in a fun, unique way. I can’t say I’m much of a natural endurance runner, but a 5km run/walk with the added enjoyment of wine tasting for the last 1km is definitely something I’m up for!”
This event has taken the country by storm. The Grapest 5K Run is the newest, most unique event to hit the Aussie running scene, and wine-loving fitness enthusiasts have run, walked, sipped and skipped their way through some of the most picturesque wine regions across Australia.
If you’re looking for a little extra motivation to start exercising, a wine-based fun run might just be what you need. But you'll have to put in the hard yards before you get your red and white rewards.
Start by running (or walking) through and around the vines of the stunning Lake Breeze Wines for 5 or 10 kilometres, spurred on by the promise of a wine-tasting cool-down walk to the finish line. Linger a while at the four wine-tasting stations, sampling some of the best wines Langhorne Creek has to offer. Not much of a runner? Fear not, for those who are particularly fitness-challenged, the wine-tasting section can be experienced on its own. The ticket price will include lots of useful things you’ll need on the day. A custom wine glass attached to a lanyard - now you’re hands-free; a sexy branded headband, the unique ‘Sip Happens’ bottle stopper medal at the finish line, and hot entertainment to set the after-party on fire and mix up a storm in a wine glass!
From Victoria to NSW and the ACT, Queensland to Western Australia, the Grapest 5k Run showcases some of the best wineries and vineyards across Australia, and now the wine-loving runners of Langhorne Creek are set to experience the event right on their own doorstep.
Alexandrina Council’s Mayor, Keith Parkes, said “Langhorne Creek, regarded as one of Australian viticulture’s best kept secrets, provides the perfect location for South Australia’s leg of the 2017 Grapest 5K Run. We are excited to welcome this event to the Langhorne Creek Wine Region in November and encourage locals and visitors alike to have fun, be active and enjoy some fantastic local wine and produce in a beautiful rural setting.”
Rural City of Murray Bridge’s Manager of Organisational Development, Martin Smallridge, said “This event presents a wonderful opportunity for people from all over the country to experience one of Australia’s most prestigious, award-winning regions, and enjoy our superb local produce that we are renowned for. The City of Murray Bridge is pleased to support the Grapest 5K Run event to progress one of our key economic development objectives of working with neighboring councils to develop and promote an integrated schedule of events that attracts visitors to the region. We look forward to the positive economic and social benefits it will bring to local businesses and our communities.”
Exquisite scenery, a bit of healthy exercise, a leisurely sampling of some of the Langhorne Creek Region’s most beautiful vintages, and a rockin’ after-party. Whether you’re a running enthusiast, a lover of fine wines, or just love a great night out, the Grapest 5k Run has something for everyone.
