Let’s take a look at some of our picks for Fleurieu Peninsula’s best bakeries, we dare you to walk past any of these without picking up a few treats.

An Aussie Road trip isn’t complete without a duck-in to a good old-fashioned country bakery. The type that boasts the best vanilla slice on either side of the peninsula, or those that sell pies so good the mere scent of the savoury flaky pastry beckons you inside. One of the great pleasures of stepping into a bakery is being confronted with the delicious pastries and bread and savouring the idea that even more delicious goodies are being baked out the back.

PORT ELLIOT BAKERY, PORT ELLIOT

Known for their very legendary ‘doughnut of the month’ plus its array of delicious pies, sweets, buns, and bread, Port Elliot Bakery has become somewhat of an icon in our wondrous state. Queues of people lining up to grab their dose of freshly baked goods are often seen as you pass through the coastal town of Port Elliot, and there's very good reason for it. The bakery is world-class, here you’ll be rewarded with some of the best pastries and cakes you can poke a fork at.

Proudly servicing our pastry cravings for 28 years, the Port Elliot Bakery is still operated by its original owners: the Gorman-Horrocks family. The site has been a bakery and patisserie for over a hundred years with the original wood-fired oven still in place. There are picnic tables and seating outside under the gum trees which is the perfect addition to this bakery. It really is the perfect place to stop, have a delicious lunch and take in Port Elliot’s surroundings.

Local Tip: The town’s most popular beach – Horseshoe Bay – offers a safer swimming haven amongst rough southern swell, and the flagged portion of the beach is monitored by surf lifeguards over the summer.  Visitors can take in the magnificent scenery by following the coastal walk around the headlands and protected bays.

HOME GRAIN BAKERY, ALDINGA

Welcome to Home Grain Bakery, a comely heritage-listed former general store in Old Coach Road's rejuvenated precinct, where charming original windows and Baltic pine floors of 1920 remain.  Baking everything from scratch from local ingredients, the Fleurieu Peninsula’s Home Grain Bakery is the product of Toff & Cara West's vision. Believe it or not, Cara being American had never tried a sausage roll before opening day, but trust us when we say they couldn't be better.

Creative flair is on show with the Pie of the Month, built around a quality local product. One of the most popular is the Steak and Stout Pie made with McLaren Vale Goodieson Brewery stout, followed closely by the Drunken Lamb Pie which uses wine from Aldinga’s Big Easy Radio.

Local Tip: Set a few kilometres inland from stunning Aldinga Beach, the township of Aldinga packs plenty of punch for its size! Once a busy farming centre, historic buildings now house a range of food, wine, and boutique shopping experiences. Spend the day here, marveling at all it has to offer.

YANKALILLA BAKERY, YANKALILLA

Just 65km's south of Adelaide, discover the Yankalilla Bakery, a must-stop on your Fleurieu Peninsula journey. Located in the main street, these guys have been serving up Fleurieu Peninsula locals and visitors alike an array of freshly made baked goods and pastries for years. This is an essential pit stop for southern Fleurieu & Kangaroo Island holidaymakers for as long as anyone can remember, Yankalilla's buzzy bakehouse is a real community mainstay. The versatility here is the bakeries greatest strength: the exceptional freshly baked bread is bolstered by a line-up that includes plenty of pastries and cakes.

Take your foot off the accelerator when zipping along Main South Road – a couple of kilometres from the coast – because you’re likely to blink and miss this popular spot. Their famed flavoured Berliner’s have been a long-time favourite, with limited edition flavours like FruChoc, Aero, caramel cream and more! The team at Yankalilla Bakery also boast an impressive line-up of baked goods suited to vegans & vegetarians.

Local Tip: One of the larger towns in the Fleurieu Peninsula, Yankalilla has retained its 'old village' atmosphere, with the pretty Bungala River flowing through the township. Take a walk along the tree-lined streets, admiring the rural architecture and cottage gardens this town has to offer.

OCEAN STREET BAKEHOUSE, VICTOR HARBOR

Talk about prime pastries in a prime location. Foundered in 1990, the Ocean Street Bakery’s home in Victor Harbor’s main street makes for one convenient drop-in. This little bakery can be busy at times, which is a true testament to the quality of the product they make. Whether you’re after a traditional sourdough loaf, an experimental croissant creation, or a lavishly stacked sandwich, we guarantee there is something here to satisfy every craving.

The bread and buns are fresh and light, the pies & pasties are full of flavour, and the bee stings need to be seen to be believed. If you’re a pie-floater fan but have a hard time tracking one down, this will be your place. This country-style bakery which serves mostly traditional-style bakery food is in the perfect spot to stop off for pre-adventure fuel before exploring Victor Harbor and Granite Island.

Local Tip: Wander 200-metres down to the foreshore area of Victor Harbor, the gateway to Granite Island, with a recently renovated causeway taking you across the sparkling ocean.
