84 kilometres from Adelaide
Now a well-established wine region, home to One Paddock and several other popular wineries and cellar doors, Currency Creek's earliest claim to fame was that it was once proposed as the site for the South Australian capital. Now located only 10 minutes from Goolwa and the Mouth of the Murray River it's a must add on anyone in the area.
Visit Lions Park for a convenient serviced picnic spot beside a spring-fed stream, with one of South Australia's tallest rail viaducts just a short walk up the valley. Visitors should allow time to walk through the nearby Black Swamp, a heritage-listed wetland featuring small waterfalls and plenty of local wildlife!
Currency Creek is also known for its scarred trees – where Aboriginal Australians sourced wood for canoes. While looking out for these historic ‘canoe trees’, lucky visitors may also spot one of the rare bird species that populate the area.
