A 5-Day Self-Drive Itinerary with Sam from Bush and Bay

Hi there! I’m Sam, one half of Bush and Bay, a travel blog my partner Wim and I created to share our adventures around Australia. We are big fans of road trips, and finding those hidden gems that make you stop and stare. Our goal is to inspire others to hit the road and explore those beautiful places Australia has to offer.

We’ve spent a lot of time exploring diverse landscapes of South Australia, and the Fleurieu Peninsula is one of those places that has it all. Rolling hills, a wild coastline, charming country towns and national parks that’ll leave you breathless. Throw some epic things to do in the mixture, and you’ll get an incredible road trip you’ll never forget.

I’ve put together this 5-day self-drive itinerary to help you experience the very best of the region. You can use it as an inspiration to plan your own trip, or as a full guide to follow when exploring this beautiful part of South Australia. Ideally, you start this itinerary on Friday so you won’t miss out on anything.

Let’s hit the road!

The Best Of The Fleurieu Peninsula - A 5-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1: McLaren Vale - Wines, Vines and E-Bikes

McLaren Vale is best explored on two wheels. Hiring an e-bike from Deluxe Ebike Tours lets you cruise through the vines with style and without much effort. We took the new McLaren Flat Trail, which isn’t a long ride, but the views are just next level as you’ll be riding through the vineyards. You can also opt for a guided ride, or take off on your own for the day like we did.

There are so many cellar doors in this region, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. After a few visits over the years, here are two unforgettable wine experiences I’d recommend.

The Blending Bench at d’Arenberg Cube

This is not your average wine tasting. At the Blending Bench, you actually become the winemaker. Blend your own Shiraz, bottle it, name it, and take it home with you. It’s hands-on, a little quirky, and super fun! We absolutely loved it.

Aphelion Wines - Back of the Ute Tasting

You read that right, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Hop onto the back of the ute with Rob, the winemaker himself, and enjoy a relaxed tasting right there in the vineyard with stunning views over McLaren Vale. This is a one of a kind, laid-back experience you won’t forget.

Day 2: Country Vibes

Start your morning in Willunga, ideally on a Saturday. Their farmers market is one of the best we’ve ever been to. Full of fresh produce, local goodies, great coffee and an incredible vibe. You can feel the welcoming community spirit, it makes it hard to leave. Take your time to sip on that delicious coffee, enjoy a breakfast and wander around.

Next, make your way to Langhorne Creek. A lesser-known wine region which has become one of our favourite spots. Langhorne Creek is home to some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. There are not many cellar doors here, and they are all about unique boutique blends and relaxed vibes.

Start your visit at Kimbolton Wines, where you can enjoy a seasonal cheese and wine flight while overlooking the vineyards.

If you’re after something a bit different, check out Little Pete Brewing Co. This place is all outdoors (but covered), right between the vines, with some fire pits and a big bonfire for the cooler months. And, of course, a great selection of beers. Perfect for beer lovers or when you’ve had enough vino for the day.

Day 3: A Taste of Goolwa

Today is all about getting to experience the area, and getting your arms working.

You can take two directions depending on your vibe. Active adventurer or hands-on foodie? You choose.

Option 1: Paddle through the Coorong

For an adventurous experience, join the Rivers End Explorer Guided Tour with Canoe the Coorong. It’s just incredible paddling along this stunning, bird-filled landscape, spotting pelicans and seals, and learning about this unique ecosystem. After spotting some local seals, you will stretch your legs with a walk across the dunes. You might spot some emus or kangaroos during your walk! There’s morning tea included (yes, bikkies!), and you even get to try your hand at catching Goolwa’s famous cockles (also known as pipis) for lunch! It’s a half-day tour, and honestly, it’s one you won’t forget.

Option 2: Bake your way through the day

Prefer to stay dry, but still get those arms working? Book a bread baking workshop with the lovely Foodbuilder Anita. This hands-on class is so much fun. You’ll make sourdough, braided bread, fruit loaf, croissants and even pretzels. It’s fun, interactive and you’ll walk away with skills, stories, sourdough starter, and fresh dough to bake off the next day. It’s a delicious way to connect with the region through local produce.

Afterwards, cruise towards Victor Harbor for a relaxed afternoon. Head to Rosetta Head (The Bluff) for dolphin spotting or to watch locals fish from the jetty. If you’re up for it, walk to the top of the bluff for panoramic views over Petrel Cove, Waitpinga Cliffs and Victor Harbor. Or take the car up for a scenic drive, especially stunning at sunset.

Day 4: Into The Bush - Deep Creek National Park

Time to lace up the hiking boots. We’re going bush!

Deep Creek National Park is one of South Australia’s most beautiful parks. You’ll find 15 walking trails for every fitness level, from easy to very difficult. Start your day with the Stringybark Loop Trail, an easy 30 minute stroll through native stringybark forest where you might spot some colourful funghi, lots of birdlife like the beautiful yellow-tail black cockatoo and you might spot a kangaroo on the walking path.

Pack a picnic for lunch and head to Tapanappa Lookout. This must be one of the best lookouts in Australia! With stunning views of the Southern Ocean and Kangaroo Island in the distance, this is a top lunch spot.

In the afternoon, make your way to Blowhole Beach. A real hidden gem. Park at Cobbler Hill Picnic Area and walk down (it’s a steep walk back up, but so worth it), or, when you travel with a 4WD, take the rocky 4WD track down to the beach.

Day 5: Coastal Cruising

Let’s finish this trip with a coastline that will blow you away.

Start your morning at Carrickalinga, a peaceful beach with calm waters and rock pools that are perfect for a little morning dip. If you’re keen for a walk, head to the headland and find a secret beach, waiting to be discovered.

From here, cruise along the iconic Route 31 Coastal Drive. A 31-kilometer stretch that runs from Sellicks Beach to O’Sullivans Beach.

Make a stop at Sellicks Beach, where (if the tide’s right) you can drive right onto the beach. Just make sure that you’re always responsible and respectful when driving on the beach, and be conscious of the environment when doing so. It’s a great spot for lunch, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or just relaxing under the sun. Go for a wander along the beach and you might find some hidden caves at the southern end of the beach.

Finish your day at Port Noarlunga, where you can swim, snorkel or paddleboard by the reef. Your 5 days are coming to an end, and what’s a better way to end it than watching the sunset over the ocean. Watch the sunset from the jetty or head to the famous staircase at the river mouth for those beautiful golden hour views.

And that’s a wrap! Five unforgettable days on the Fleurieu Peninsula. An area where you’ll find beach, bush, hiking, town vibes, and country experiences. You can explore the beautiful coastal scenery, enjoy hiking trails through bushland, and visit charming towns that showcase the local culture all in one trip. What’s not to love about the Fleurieu!

I hope this itinerary will inspire you to go out and experience the best of what the Fleurieu Peninsula has to offer. Happy adventuring!
